Because of its role in the community, the pub is home to many sports, whether they be active or passive.
Walk into any local and you’ll see card games such as whist, brag, bridge and many more in full swing with money moving back and forth between winning and losing players.
Other active traditional games that are associated with the pub - where it is required you at least try and make the effort to stand up - are darts, skittles (both the long-alley and table variety), snooker, pool and bar billiards to name but a few. The one-arm bandit falls between active and passive depending on how much money you intend to lose – you may be tempted to pull up a bar-stool, sip your pint and reserve the machine for the next hour or so, much to the disgust of other drinkers who are also in a hurry to be rid of their loose change!!
Due to the competitive nature of sport, the pub is also the home of the pub-league; and all the games mentioned previously can and will be fought against other pubs in or around the area that are willing to participate.
Pub quizzes are also immensely popular due to the growing number of similar competitions shown on TV. They range from simple question and answer sessions to the music quiz which can be supported by a fully-fledged sound system. Visit the BBC iPlayer to play some pub quizzes.
Bingo is another popular pub game involving one person, the bingo caller, whose job is to select the balls and call out the numbers to the persons playing. Money can also be won in this game, only once a player has obtained a full sheet of numbers. Not all pubs play bingo so if you are a huge fan why not get down to your local bingo hall or community centre and have a go. You can also play online bingo at bingobonus.org.uk, which allows you to search through a range of bingo operators, such as Crown bingo to find the most suitable for you.
As a final thought, does anyone remember Dave Lee Travis (DLT) on Radio 1 in the 1980s and his pub quiz challenge “Double Top”?? |
